Firstly, sorry for my awful title 😀. That’s a punk song from 1978. Sham 69 released it as a plea for fans to stop fighting during concerts. But it’s nothing to do with young kids. And it’s nothing to do with baby goats either. I assume the prompt relates to children rather than baby goats. If I’m wrong, please forgive me 😀.

Today’s prompt brings to mind the final line of the chorus of the 1993 Irish Eurovision winner (In Your Eyes), “This woman is a child again”.
In your eyes (Your eyes)
Seems so right
I see forever in your smile
This woman is a child again
(In your eyes)
The song is about someone who seems to have lost their love of life. Then falling in love changes everything. Romance can do that, but sad to say, those really magical feelings don’t last very long. For me, all the best things in this life are just a foretaste of something much greater, something much more heavenly. In short, they point to God.
But even apart from spiritual matters, how can I be a kid at heart? Well, I remember walking around toy shops as a child and feeling their magic. I lost interest in all that in early adulthood. But when I reached my 30s and had my own kids, it all seemed to come back.
We visited Belfast at Christmas 1994 and 1995 and brought the kids to Leisureworld.
Seeing this video brought it all back to me. My little 2-year-old daughter was given a sweet by Santa and proceeded to follow him around the shop in the hope of getting another one 😀. I was very sorry to find that the shop had closed in 1998.
And it was around then that I bought my first computer games console – a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). When dealing with all the stresses and strains of adulthood, it’s nice to go back to being a child for part of the day. And the kids grew up with The Simpsons, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean and so much else. It was great to have experienced all that with them. I sometimes wonder how things might have been if I had remained single. I’d like to think that I still would have been into all that.
The point is often made that there’s a big difference between being childish and childlike. Maybe they mean the same thing, but we use the word childish to describe immature, bad behaviour. For example, an adult might go through life living off other people or might be prone to temper tantrums 😀. But child-like behaviour is different. I think of people who have a sense of humour and who take delight in little things.
Spiritually, child-like behaviour is encouraged, and childish behaviour is discouraged.
Back in 1973, Suffer Little Children, was a big hit in Ireland. It was recorded in St. Francis Church Cork and featured Canon Sidney McEwan and the Cork Children’s choir. I was into glam rock at the time, and I generally disliked Irish music, but there was something special about this one. It still gladdens my heart to hear it.
The term suffer was puzzling, but it was just an old-fashioned way of saying “Let.” It’s interesting to compare the King James Bible to the New International Version for this verse:
Matt 19:13-15 (King James)
13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
Matt 19:13-15 (NIV)
13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
It’s a little reminder of how we just need to approach God with trust, humility, and an eagerness to learn. It’s perfectly acceptable to be hesitant and cautious about preachers, religions and churches. Paul warns people about being led astray by people:
Ephesians 4:14
“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching…”
But when we approach God directly, we can be child-like and put all our faith in him. In fact, we become his children when we believe.
John 1:12-13
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Just the other day my literature lec told us to stop referring to children as kids and I couldn’t agree more, 😀 but in this context we know what it means right?
