I’m not sure how to answer this one, but I sometimes notice people’s jobs when I’m on holiday and think to myself “wow, I’d love that job.” Maybe it’s just easier to dream when you’re on holiday 😀.
Firstly, I’m always a little jealous of people who work in coffee shops in tourist areas. An example is the Avoca shop in Moll’s Gap in Killarney.
Another job that I’m envious of is the people who pilot the short boat trip from Glengarriff to the Garnish Island in West Cork.
And yesterday, I was watching TV, and a lady from the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester was speaking to Michael Portillo about Britain’s first railway station. I was a little jealous of her – and all those folk who work on heritage railway lines and museums.
You can see from this blog that I do enjoy pointing people to Jesus and the Bible, but you don’t need a fulltime job to do that. And when I see children with disabilities in shopping centres etc. I sometimes think that it would be wonderful if you had a job where you were a real help to them. I do remember teaching kids with disabilities when I was a young teacher, but I’m not sure if it was much of a benefit to them. They just happened to be in a special class in a normal school. But it would be great to be in a job where you could see every day that you are making a real difference. But then again, in any job, if you are working hard and paying your taxes, you are helping to build the economy, and you are providing finances that will be used to care for others.
Sometimes I notice people struggling in jobs, and I think that I’d hate to be in their shoes.
I never gave much thought to Donna Summer’s 1983 hit, She Works Hard for the Money, but so many people do have nightmare jobs. The song was inspired by a real person who Donna Summer noticed. The woman later featured on the back cover of the album of that title.
I’ll close with two Bible verses, one from the Old Testament and One from the New Testament. I often think that Ireland would be a very different place if it wasn’t for so many of our ancestors who worked so hard and also cared for others. I’d hate to see my generation and the generations that follow us lose that tradition. And we mustn’t forget the help we received from other nations. Just yesterday, while researching my Hymns: 2010 Memories post, I was reminded of how Ireland’s financial collapse led to an €85 billion bailout from the EU and IMF. How would any of that be possible if everyone chased fantasies instead of knuckling down to real work? 😀
Proverbs 12:11
“Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.”
Colossians 3:23
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
