Walk Right Now!

Daily writing prompt
How often do you walk or run?

I walk every day. I find walking quite relaxing. Recently I was reminded that it’s good to push yourself and walk so fast that you feel a little uncomfortable for 20 minutes every day. I’ve started to do that, and I find it quite exhilarating. Maybe it’s nice to have a bit of both types.

As for running, I don’t really run, except if I have to run for a bus or something. I would like to try, but I’d feel a bit self-conscious running around the neighbourhood. Maybe if I could find a nice quiet beach I could try. Speaking of beaches, let me tell you where my post title came from 😀. A couple of years ago, we were on holiday in Rossbeigh in County Kerry, and I was thinking back to our family holiday in 1981.

So, I thought that it would be nice to put some July 1981 songs on my phone. I knew many of them for years. Here’s a selection:

  • For Your Eyes Only – Sheena Easton
  • Ghost Town – The Specials
  • One Day In Your Life – Michael Jackson
  • Memory – Elaine Paige
  • Wordy Rappinghood – Tom Tom Club
  • There’s A Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis – Kirsty MacColl
  • Sat In Your Lap – Kate Bush
  • Happy Birthday – Stevie Wonder
  • Green Door – Shakin’ Stevens
  • Girls On Film – Duran Duran

However, it’s always nice to discover an old song that you didn’t make much of at the time, that suddenly hits you and brings you back in time. And Walk Right Now by The Jacksons did just that for me. I tended to see disco music as girls’ music at the time, but listening to it now, it’s a lot better than much of the “cool” new wave and post punk stuff that I was into.

Walk Right Now

Perhaps if I listened to it while doing my fast walking, it would increase my pace. I do listen to hymns too, but there aren’t many fast ones. But maybe I could listen to Marching On in the Light of God.

Marching On in the light of God

A key memory of that 1981 holiday was travelling to Valentia Island, which is near Rossbeigh, and being above the clouds. I took a slide and scanned it into my computer some years ago. I’m sorry that I ever took slides, but none of you warned me that slides don’t always last well and don’t scan as well as photographs. I’m not blaming you. Perhaps you weren’t on WordPress.com in 1981 😀.

What other pop songs do I know that mention walking? Here we go! I’ll just mention 10.

And here are 10 about running:

And here are two hymns. One mentions walk and the other mentions run 😀.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee
Run to the Father

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Isaiah 40:30-31
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
