All Kinds of Everything

Daily writing prompt
What are you curious about?

I’m old enough to remember Ireland’s first Eurovision win; Dana with All Kinds of Everything. It’s a song about romance, but even apart from romance, you can take delight in learning about all kinds of everything.

All Kinds of Everything

Think also of My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music. We sometimes laugh at such songs. When I was a teenager, I’d never have wanted to be seen listening to such stuff. But the older I get, the more I want to widen my interests and focus on the wider world, particularly on what’s delightful in it.

This week I decided to spend about 30 minutes every day going through an alphabetic list of countries, one at a time. So perhaps that could be my answer. I’m curious about other countries. I’ll get through them all in about 200 days and start again πŸ˜€. And I pray for which ever one I’m on each day and watch a few YouTube videos.

I suppose you could say that I’m curious about anything that I’m interested in. I also enjoy surveying my own past, looking back and trying to find old pictures of my hometown, Cork, on the web and studying its history. I’ve been interested in theology for many years too. My favourite book, apart from the Bible, is Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. I’d often go through it thinking that this time I’ll finally grasp everything and come to a settled opinion about issues that people might debate about. But as I get older, and deepen my knowledge and understanding, it’s easier to understand and respect other points of view. So, I never come to a settled opinion about everything, but I do know all that I need to know about the essentials of my faith.

And I like the fact that there’s always so much more to discover. It’s a bit like visiting a city for the first time. There’s too much to explore for one visit, so you come back another time, or even again and again. That’s much better than running out of things to do.

There’s an old hymn about the Bible called “Tis old, tis old, but every new”. And that’s precisely how I feel. I’m always discovering new things. I never have a “been there, done that” mentality about it.

And I think of two hymns that celebrate creation:

How Great Thou Art
For the Beauty of the Earth

There’s a lot wrong with the world, and we should also be aware of that. But when I focus on a country such as Afghanistan, it’s much easier to empathize with its people if I see its beauty and its people by watching tourist videos or exploring it on GoogleEarth.

Isaiah 45:22
β€œTurn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.”

John 3:16
β€œFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
