So, what’s the oldest thing I own that I still use daily?

Well, apart from my Bible and household utensils, I think of my beloved Squire Stratocaster electric guitar. I often use it with my Rocksmith game, which I purchased about the same time.
Regarding the guitar, I’m a lifelong learner. I bought a cheap one in Buckley’s, Academy Street, Cork in 1976 and got nowhere with it. Then, I got a Yamaha electric guitar in 2002 during a mid-life crisis 😀 and made slow steady progress. Since then, I’ve bought a bass, an acoustic guitar, but I do use the stat on a daily basis. I do try to play some of the newer Christian worship songs as well as my old pop/rock favourites.
When I was young, I used to wish that Christian contemporary music was as good as the secular stuff. And we are slowly getting there because the secular stuff is getting worse and worse. And the Christian contemporary music has got better. For example, let me show some songs from 2014, which is when I bought by stat:
I do try to find secular songs that I like too. Nowadays it might be a handful of secular songs each year, although I found nine for 2014, mainly by older artists:
- Invisible – U2
- Magic – Coldplay
- A Sky Full of Stars – Coldplay
- Shake it Off – Taylor Swift
- Miracle of Joey Ramone – U2
- Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson ft Bruno Marks
- Every Breaking Wave – U2
- Happy – Pharrell Williams
- Take Me to Church – Hozier
Despite the name, Take Me to Church isn’t a Christian song, but it’s quite impressive musically. I first heard it during a U2 interview introducing their Songs of Innocence album. When I was young, if you mentioned any month of any year of my life (after 10-year’s old) I could tell you what songs were in the charts that month. As the years went by, I had less interest in pop music, but I still like to figure out what memorable songs were released each year. Currently, I’m beginning to do this with worship music too. I don’t play in church, but I secretly learn the songs at home. And of course, I love the old hymns too.
